Now if we talk about the design and the most important question who take the initiative to make the school, so the Rajkumari Ratnavati girls’ school in rajasthan was conceptualised by CITTA founder Michael Daube, and designed by US-based architect Diana Kellogg.
Diana travelled to India in 2014, and saw how life in the desert was thriving. “I have never worked outside New York, and it was difficult to comprehend building a project in the middle of the desert. But upon my visit here, I saw the beautiful buildings, music and art of Rajasthan. Even the step-wells here are an architectural wonder. The experience gave me the confidence that this project could be made,” she says.
Michael says Diana worked for almost two years before she came up with the final design. “Diana had some ideas of feminine designs for strength that spurred the direction in which she could flourish. She rose to the occasion to make the school out of cutting stone and bring out a purposeful, beautiful and stunning architectural piece,” he says.
The view of the school is really eye catching and impressive. shape of the school is oval which make it different from the other school designed in india. the part of the school which is also known as gyaan center, will accommodate 400 girls from kindergarten to class 10th. There is also textile museum, performance hall, exhibition space for artisans to sell their crafts and a separate portion for women where they can gather the knowledge of traditional arts like weaving and textiles to preserve dying handicrafts.
The Rajkumari Ratnavati Girl’s school is basically promoting or made by local hand carved jaisalmer sandstone by local craftsmen. Using local material to create infrastructure helped reduce carbon emissions, and Kellogg chose to build a solar panel canopy on the roof as a cooling system where temperatures peak close to 120 degrees.
