Hi all,

Have you ever dug a hole on land or ever seen that? Can you tell how deep was that, maybe 10m, 80m, or 200m?

But do you know the deepest hole on the earth is 12,262 meters?

Yes, it’s true,

The Kola super-deep borehole is 12,262 meters deep and named SG-3. The Kola super deep borehole is the result of the scientific drilling project. The Kola super deep borehole is in the soviet union in the pechengsky district, near the Russian border with Norway, on the Kola peninsula.

The project was started in 1965 and the drilling started in 1970 using the Uralmash-4E. The project had broken all the records in 1979 and in 1983 the drill reached an unbelievable depth of 12km.

The project was stopped in 1995 with a depth of 12,262. The main objective of this project was to drill as deep as possible into the earth’s crust or at least a depth of 15000.

Because of the higher expected temperature at this depth and location 180°C instead of the expected 100°C, drilling deeper was deemed unfeasible. Drilling was impossible because of the higher temperature and decrease in density and that caused the rock to behave somewhat like plastic.

Scientists discovered that there is a lot of water underground and many more discoveries.

The Kola Superdeep Borehole is still the deepest manmade point on Earth. The site has been abandoned since 2008. Only Viktor lives there now. Viktor, the last geologist living there and worked on the Kola superdeep project until it closed.

The Kola superdeep borehole is now a tourist point.

For me, it is some kind of scary place and in the future, if I get a chance to visit there I am going to see it at one arm’s distance.

Thanks for reading.
